Artist Rendering of Expo 2020 at Moffett Field

Here is an artist rendering released today showing how Moffett Field would look as a world's fair in 2020.

I have to say I'm really excited about the possibilities here. I like the ferry connection that would presumably link to San Francisco and Oakland... and wonder how the site could be linked up to the Caltrain Station across Highway 101. A temporary gondola ride over the freeway would be an interesting solution.

There's already light rail connecting Mountain View Caltrain and the south end of Moffett Field. It should work great.

I don't think the light rail alone would be able to support the kind of traffic the expo would generate. However, it looks like they're proposing ferry service... likely to San Francisco and Oakland... and there would likely be some connection to the nearby Caltrain Stations.

Typical expositions of this size have attendance ranging from 20 to 40 million (Shanghai's expecting 70 million or more, but is a special case). Given the six month run of the expo, the site would receive 100,000 to 200,000 guests each day.

I like the idea of ferries coming down the bay, but it might be unrealistic to think they could carry a significant number of visitors. The Bay Area's best high speed ferry example is Vallejo Baylink, which takes a little over an hour to go 25 miles and can carry up to 300 passengers. A trip from either Oakland or SF to Moffett would be 30 miles. So they'd either have to run a lot of ferries on a very rigorous schedule, or train service will have to be beefed up.

Additional Caltrain trains plus expanded light rail shuttles between Mt. View and Moffett could work in conjunction with the ferries. The trip between the two stops is only 10 minutes.
